Seeing my friend join a sorority made me curious and motivated to learn more about them. Any questions I had regarding a sorority I asked her. What is rushing? What is pledging? Do they haze? And so on.
By the time Fall semester began, I started looking into possible sororities to join. I stopped by a few tables and picked up flyers and talked to some of the girls. Multicultural sororities became my interest. After meeting the girls of the sorority that I later joined I knew that it would be a good fit for me.
Being in a sorority has changed and marked my life in the most positive ways. Not only have I gained many new skills I never thought I could posses but I have also made lasting bonds with some wonderful girls.
It shocks me when I hear all the negative comments directed toward sororities and girls that belong to a sorority. I have heard these negative comments, assumptions, and wrongful stereotypes about sororities from adults, college students, young people, and even in the media. Comments such as "She was so drunk was partying like a sorority girl" makes me realize the the public view on sororities.
I can say one thing, stereotypes such as sorority girls are easy, they are wild and only get drunk and party all the time do not apply to me or any of my sorority sisters. We always strive for success, we are goal oriented, strong minded, and hard working individuals. I can say this about each and every one of my sisters. We have many alumni that have graduated with degrees varying from psychology, engineering, business administration, to history.
Being an active member of a sorority requires hard work and dedication, from fundraising to hosting events to benefit our philanthropy takes days of effort and planning.
